Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are trained to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological issues.

People seek psychiatric help for a variety of reasons, ranging from sudden incidents like panic attacks, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts to long-term struggles such as persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness that disrupt daily life.

Five major psychiatric disorders include:

  • Autism
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Major Depression
  • Schizophrenia
