Hyperactivity Disorder

Hyperactivity is characterized by excessive movement, restlessness, fidgeting, tapping, or talking — even in situations where it is inappropriate. In adults, it often presents as extreme restlessness or an inability to stay quiet.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental health conditions in children. It is marked by persistent patterns of inattention (difficulty focusing), hyperactivity (excessive, inappropriate movement), and impulsivity (hasty actions without forethought).

A child exhibiting hyperactive and impulsive behaviors may often:

  • Fidget with or tap their hands or feet, or squirm in their seat
  • Struggle to remain seated in class or other settings
  • Appear constantly “on the go” or act as if "driven by a motor"
  • Run or climb in inappropriate situations
  • Find it difficult to play or engage in activities quietly
  • Talk excessively
  • Blurt out answers before a question is completed
  • Have trouble waiting their turn
  • Interrupt or intrude on others’ conversations, games, or activities
