Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes significant shifts in mood, energy levels, and the ability to function. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience intense emotional states known as mood episodes, which typically last from days to weeks. These episodes are classified as either manic/hypomanic (elevated or unusually irritable mood) or depressive (feelings of sadness or hopelessness). In between these episodes, many people with bipolar disorder experience periods of normal mood.
There are three main types of bipolar disorder:
