Abstract

Leadership is often associated with confidence, resilience, and success, yet many senior leaders experience a hidden reality - executive loneliness. Beneath the responsibility of making difficult decisions, leading teams, and maintaining a strong public image, many executives struggle with isolation, chronic stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, and, in some cases, addiction. Despite its significant impact on mental wellbeing and organizational performance, executive loneliness remains one of the least discussed challenges in leadership.

Drawing on more than two decades of international leadership, executive coaching, counselling, and psychotherapy, together with his own lived experience of executive loneliness and recovery from alcohol addiction, Nick Jonsson explores why loneliness should be recognized as a critical leadership and workplace mental health issue rather than simply a personal struggle.

The presentation introduces practical strategies for leaders and organizations to strengthen psychological safety, reduce stigma around vulnerability, recognize the early signs of mental distress, and foster cultures where authentic connection and help-seeking are encouraged. Nick also shares his Five Steps to Holistic Leadership framework, demonstrating how purpose, connection, selfawareness, and disciplined personal growth can improve both leadership effectiveness and long-term psychological wellbeing.

Participants will leave with practical tools to better support themselves, their teams, and their organizations while reframing vulnerability not as weakness, but as a leadership strength that enables healthier people, stronger cultures, and more sustainable performance.
